Meridian Habitat Park
PIERCE COUNTY, WA
When a key partner stepped back from their commitments at Meridian Habitat Park, Pierce County needed to rethink the site’s program and master plan so that improvements to the site could be implemented ahead of a fall deadline. Through charrettes and meetings with a cadre of committed community activists, MxM team members refined a site master plan and identified early project wins over a tight, three month period. This accelerated timeline allowed the County to prepare and receive a budget appropriation to construct early-win projects including the first phase of a destination natural playground.
The first phase—an accessible, nature-themed playground—provides a powerful bridge for kids and caregivers to have a deeper engagement with the natural world. Trails tucked under mature trees invite users in to play and experience the site, especially neurodiverse children who are often brought to the site by their caregivers. Swings, natural materials, quiet corners and engaging textures make this a community asset that is truly beloved.
